Who approach

There are a number of ways to find employers who might be looking for someone with your skills and experience. Below is a selection of tried and tested methods that I have encouraged jobseekers to use.

  • You can use various search engines for companies in your industry or to find companies of interest. If they have vacancies they will normally have it displayed on their website.

  • Use your local knowledge and contacts – ask friends and family members if they know of any employers that might be recruiting.

  • Read the business section in your local paper – they usually print success stories on companies which have won new orders or large contracts. They may be looking for more staff to deal with the additional workload. This may be a great way to get your foot in the door.

  • You can find addresses of employers in the Yellow Pages, Thomsons, BT telephone book & Business Directories (Usually available at local jobcentres & libraries). Directories such as Yellow Pages are useful since they categorise the overall type of work available i.e. Printers/Accountants/Supermarkets etc.

  • Be sure to choose a mix of large and small businesses – don’t rely on the big names always having vacancies – Remember, it’s a well-known fact that most companies employ less than 10 people.

  • Try and get a named person at the company who is responsible for recruiting. Although this might be a long drawn process, it’s worthwhile in the long term because the employer will appreciate the effort you have put in obtaining his/her name.
